These are genetics to enhance any top notch breeding program. There is no denying that Caligula was one of the most influential males to ever enter our North American alpaca industry. He died in 2003 at the age of 17. Caligula had served in Don Julio Barreda's plantel de mujada herd prior to his importation into the U.S., and he was the owner's top pick in the 1994 Peruvian Elite Sale. Caligula was an Accoyo plantel male who, according to Don Julio, was the only male unintentionally sent to America. While Clyde Haldane of Australia was selecting Accoyo herdsires for export to the US in 1994, Caligula jumped over a rock wall into the selection pen and Clyde astutely announced, "I'll take that one." Lucky for all of us in the U.S. because he has proven to be a great choice. He is of the renowned Shangri La line of the Accoyo Estancia. Octavio is the excellent example of his prepotence. It did not hurt that Octavio's dam was full Accoyo 4Peruvian Gloria, one of the finest production dams in the USA. Octavio was given the reputation from AOBA judge Jude Anderson as being an "outstanding" male as noted on her Pucara website. Octavio is a show quality male who had been designated by Greg Mecklem to be on his team of show males but was purchased and put to work in Canada before he was shown. He didn't have to go to the show- he didn't need to. He's a perfect picture of presence with his large bones, typey huacaya head, and balance. His fleece is dense, crimpy with fabulous bundling and has great handle.
He has consistently produced progeny with perfect conformation, fiber with incredible luster, great crimp, bundling and a silky handle. He passes along all of the finest qualities of the Accoyo line that are expected and that make the demand for the Accoyo bloodline so great. Some, but not all of his progeny are listed below. If you want ACCOYO, we have the macho for you. He will be available for limited breedings on our ranch beginning Spring 2007.
